Dragonflies are beautiful insects and one of the easiest animals to look after in a garden. They can become pests if you haven’t planted them properly. Most people who grow dragonflies end up eating them themselves. So what do they actually eat?
Well some dragonflies will eat anything, but there are some that prefer plants. Look for those that will ‘go together’ well, such as strawberry plants or lavender. You should be able to see the leaves of the plants when you look at them closely. Some dragonflies don’t need nectar, but others like to, so check that out before you plant anything new.
Another question that often comes up when someone asks “what do dragonflies eat” is about whether they like the taste of a butterfly’s wings. I personally don’t think it tastes very good, but then again I’ve never eaten anything directly from a butterfly (unless it was a potato chip). Butterflies are very particular creatures, so try and match their tastes to what you’re aiming for with your dragonflies. in very small amounts. If you’re dragonflies have recently eaten, for example, chocolate then this is to be avoided because it will make them very sluggish. I personally don’t recommend any fruit, vegetables or grains for dragonflies. You can feed your dragonflies leafy green plants, but be sure to make sure they are not over-watered, otherwise your dragonflies could become obese.
