The Dragonfly is considered by many to be the favorite of pet owners. This insect is small and relatively easy to care for and feed. A Dragonfly can live up to three years. They are a safe choice for beginners because they are a relatively new breed of insect to us. We may have heard that some insects can carry the flu and that other bugs can cause skin allergies.
Adult Dragonflies are pink or red with a clear head and white wing covers. The bug looks very much like a dragonfly but it is not a dragonfly. They have a pink or red abdomen and a white head. This insect has no legs, wings or antennae. Adults of this insect live in lakes, ponds, streams and even your refrigerator. To keep the Dragonfly alive you need to feed it twice daily with a pellet with insect food. However, once you have established that this is their favorite food you will find they are much easier to care for.
The Dragonfly is easy meal for many species of fish and will also survive in a jar for a few months. A jar with a hole in the lid will allow it to live in there. To remove the jar from the water, you should remove the lid carefully and clean the inside of the jar to remove any eggs or waste that may have been left behind. Then place the jar in a dark and warm area away from direct sunlight. Keep the jar sealed tightly and dry for a few months to allow the Dragonfly to fully acclimatize to its new environment.
