Behind the Voice Actors: Robert Downey Jr. and James the Dragonfly in ‘Dolittle’

Robert Downey Jr. has an unusual accent as Dr. Dolittle in ‘Dolittle’. The actor has even described his accent as “the toughest on Earth!” It is also true that Dr. Dolittle’s voice is a bit odd–he got it from a really weird Welshman who he met while on vacation. However, it’s still a great way to evoke a wacky resemblance to the fictional character.

James the Dragonfly in ‘Dolittle’ is voiced by Jason Mantzoukas. Tomokazu Sugita is the Japanese voice. The video below features the two actors performing their characters’ voices. Despite the budget, ‘Dolittle’ features solid animal effects. While some animals are anthropomorphized and belong in a different movie, most have realistic features. One such addition was the inclusion of humanoid eyes in the dragonfly’s head, which might have been more fitting for a cartoon, like “A Bug’s Life.”

Dolittle was originally scheduled to be released early last year, and was to be released as a spin-off of Avengers: Endgame. However, the movie was not deemed a contender for the top spot in the box office. The film’s director, Stephen Gaghan, is best known for his work on Syriana, a paranoia-infused nerve-junker. But Gaghan’s version was devoid of humour and focused on Downey Jr’s character instead of the talking animals.
